Fusion -- Peak Trump & Peak AI?

It’s sort of incredible, although maybe simply nothing more than a manifestation of the technology, the more information technology, the greater the bullshit produced. Yesterday, when the merger of Trump Media and Google backed fusion firm TAE was announced, you might think we reached some sort of peak, but such peaks are always hard to call.

It should be pointed out Trump Media’s value declined over 75% in the past 12 months, while there’s never been a sustained fusion reactor, so the merger between the two seems synergetic. At the same time, fusion has been tossed around by Google, Microsoft, Open AI, go down the list, as part of the solution to the energy needs of the latest generation of compute marketed as AI.

Here’s a few facts about fusion. The longest any sort of reaction has been sustained was a few months ago in France, 22 minutes. Fusion as any sort of viable energy concern, anytime in the future, remains at best questionable. At the very least, the whole process requires a tremendous amount of energy input and to date more energy goes in than comes out.

Unlike TAE/Trump who have nothing besides merging BS, the folks who briefly sustained this fusion reaction say of fusion's future,

“Nevertheless, given the infrastructure needed to produce this energy on a large scale, it is unlikely that fusion technology will make a significant contribution to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. For this, several technological sticking points need to be overcome, and the economic feasibility of this form of energy production must still be demonstrated.”

Several technological sticking points and economic feasibility must still be demonstrated, a punchline for an era.

We’ve got a great fusion reactor in the sky, responsible for all life on earth, we should be focused on figuring out how to use it better.

Here’s a nice short video on the technology necessary for a fusion reactor:
