On War

There’s an excellent piece in The New Yorker on Ukraine - https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2024/02/05/ukraines-democracy-in-darkness - remember Ukraine?

It should be read by all the people who have supported the war, most especially the Boomers, who after a quarter century had that long ago National Security State implanted anti-Russian switch flipped like it was 1955 or 1985 by Mrs. Bill, claiming she lost an election not because of her own foul smell, but that gangster Putin. With Ukraine, sure, absolutely, blame Putin, he’s certainly criminally culpable, but do so with an understanding of the complete tragedy and disaster that has been post-Soviet US National Security State policy toward both Russia and Ukraine. With very little effort and even less smarts on the part of the US, this whole tragic-idiocy could have been avoided.

This war has been a disaster for Ukraine. All the American talking points that litter this article about the war being about democracy, that’s the last thing it’s about. After all, at this point, what do we know about democracy?
